The clients for this custom built home hired Weiss Building & Development as a design builder. WBD was able to deliver the design and construction under a single contract, and point of accountability. The clients came to us because they wanted a energy efficient home that would have very low operation and maintenance costs, and provide a healthy environment for their young family.
This home is seeking Passive House certification under Passive House Institute US’ newest compliance path. Passive House is the world’s most stringent energy efficiency standard. The home is also built to the NAHB National Green Building Standard – Emerald, DOE Net Zero Ready certification, Energy Star 3.0, and EPA Indoor Air Plus.
The project showcases WBD’s commitment to excellence in building science, indoor air quality, energy efficiency, and sustainability. The home features a number of advanced building components including a super-insulated air-tight building envelope, extremely efficient European windows and doors, an ultra-efficient, minisplit heating/cooling system, and an energy recovery ventilation system that is 93% efficient.
In order to ensure excellent indoor air quality, only no or low VOC products were used to construct the home. The indoor air quality was third party lab tested to confirm that this house has superior indoor air quality. The house is a 10 minute walk from the Harlem CTA stop on the Green Line and the Oak Park Metra stop.
