ABSTRACT:

Passive House, Healthy Home – This first-of-a-kind home for Chicagoland sets a high bar for energy efficiency and indoor health: it is the first Certified Passive House in the Chicago region (28th in nation), and the second DOE Challenge Home in Illinois (one of first 20 in nation). Passive House is the most stringent building energy efficiency standard in the world; it requires that the envelope of the home is designed to minimize losses and maximize passive gains, with careful attention to building science and indoor air quality. The result is a super comfortable home with minimal operating costs, great indoor air quality, and far less maintenance requirements than a typical home. With its cost-effective emphasis on the building envelope, Passive design is a good first step toward Net Zero building. While energy efficiency and durability were very important to the clients, so was a very healthy interior. All construction materials, adhesives, caulks, paints, furniture, and other finish goods were screened for their effect on indoor air quality. More importantly, third-party indoor air quality lab testing was conducted post construction, and testing will continue through the first year of occupancy. This home will serve as a case study and will feed data to a new certification program, the Healthy Home Initiative, currently in its pilot phase.

This home won the 2013 USGBC Emerald Award for Home Innovation.
