It is a LEED Silver-certified building that houses 400 students and is home to the North Central College indoor track and field program. The Res/Rec Center integrates many principles of sustainable development to positively impact human and environmental health. Features include energy-efficient windows, radiant heat, high-efficiency air conditioning, heat recovery ventilators, a domestic hot water waste heat recovery system, a white membrane roof to reduce the heat island effect, low-flow plumbing fixtures, low-VOC materials, extensive use of recycled materials and a large geothermal installation with sixty 650-foot deep geothermal wells. The building is constructed with precast double wall, double floor and conventional sandwich panels, as well as precast concrete columns, beams, stairs, landings, elevator shafts and water retention storage tanks.
