ABSTRACT:
The Swainson House at Serosun Farms is our first demonstration home to be built in this unique sustainable community.   Serosun Farms is a farm preservation project that creates a healthy, sustainable, luxury community on a 410 acre farm.  It is one of the first of its kind to integrate a community into a farm creating the rare opportunity for a rural, pastoral lifestyle but still having easy access to Chicago and its great amenities.  All homes in the community must meet stringent sustainable and healthy guidelines making it one of the few sustainable communities in the Chicago area.  The community will include 114 home sites with over 140 acres of open space with restored savannah woodlands, prairie and wetlands; a large equestrian facility; an 150 acre sustainable farm; and a small commercial area with farmers market, restaurant, and community center.

The home design is based on a four square farm house base with a wraparound porch and a semi-detached garage.   The styling is contemporary farmhouse with traditional rural finishes.  Features include a spectacular great room with loft, gourmet kitchen featuring subzero and wolf appliances, bedroom wing on the first floor, finished basement and garage loft.  The home design has a lot of flexibility to size it to a family’s needs from a 2,500 sf two or three bedroom home to a 3900 sf four or five bedroom home.   Luxury can be sustainable.

The home features a high efficiency (tight) envelope; advanced framing techniques; energy efficient windows; passive solar elements; a geothermal heating, air conditioning, and hot water system from ClimateMaster; automated ventilation system (ERV); energy and water efficient appliances; water efficient plumbing fixtures; high efficiency lighting; an advanced home automation system; sustainable and healthy interior finishes; rain harvesting and green roof systems; and a drought tolerant and natives based landscape with over half of the lot in natural prairie.
