ABSTRACT:

The Tesla Home, designed by Coda Design + Build, goal was to create a state of the art smart home that would exemplify responsible construction and lead the neighborhood in sustainable design.

Coda was established in 1998, and since 2000 has rolled out their ecoBuild program to increase focus on sustainability and make use of intelligent design techniques inside and out. The 2,400 square foot home was constructed to maximize solar orientation for charging the owner’s Tesla, and maximizing the natural lighting for greater efficiency.  In addition, the owner sought a minimalistic floor plan to reduce costs in construction and more significantly ongoing operations of the home.  Reduced sizes appliances and features reflect their desire to consume less.

The house utilizes a tank-less water heater, with energy star qualified appliances, windows and lighting controls. The house is equipped with micro-split heating/cooling and a Central Energy Recover Ventilators (CERV) to keep occupants comfortable and dry while saving on energy bills.  The aluminum roof with sun reflective color and sun shades further cut down on the heat load of the home to reduce energy consumption.  To ensure excellent indoor air quality, only low VOC products and finishes were used inside the home.  The drywall actually absorbs VOC in the air.

The result of these elements coming together is that the home’s environmental impact is a fraction of the standard home. The Tesla Home is currently enrolled in the Illinois Greenstar rating program and the HERS rating program to provide third party verification that the home was designed with sustainability in mind.
